Gay Penguins

My thanks to LadyInTheHat from PostMormon.org for the topic of this article... :) She is very insightful, and I love her to death.

There is a book out there geared to children around the age of 6, about two male penguins falling in love and raising a baby penguin together. (Not sure what to call a baby penguin... chick?) The book, in my opinion, is well written and in good taste. It simply explains that there are people out there, or animals out there in this case, that happen to love people that share their own gender.

On the thread, the question lies with when to tell and talk to kids about this issue. I think the book is a great thing, and I have no problem with it at all, but others thought that a 6 year old shouldn't need to have sexuality of any kind thrown at them. I see their point of view, but if we want to stop talking about gay people raising children, then we shouldn't talk about heterosexual couples raising children. Lets face it... there are more than a few books out there written specifically for kids to explain that Mommy and Daddy are going to have a new baby... right?

Just a personal thought...

The penguin story is an actual true story about two penguins in a zoo. It really happened, and there are more documented cases of homosexual activity in the animal kingdom. Shouldn't that show just a little that being gay isn't a choice? That it is something natural that happens, it's just how some people are?

The whole proposition 8 thing has really brought the cause of equal rights everywhere. We shouldn't be pulling rank over who has the right to do what over something that goes on in a bedroom behind closed doors. If you don't like homosexuality, or find it a sin, that is your right... but it's also their right to live life in a way that makes them happy.

Years and years ago the civil rights movement was trying to say the same thing. Hell, people used to think that you shouldn't even marry outside your race, and it was illegal in places (I could be wrong there... but I am sure I remember that.) Luckily the world changed, and even though there are bigoted people out there, they have the same rights as those with white skin. I truly think it's only a matter of time before people realize that.

Hopefully sooner rather than later.
